KICK OFF 3.00pm

PRE-MATCH BUILD UP

Latics arrive at Sixfields Stadium on a nine match unbeaten run in all competitions and seven in Sky Bet League One.  Despite back-to-back 0- draws against promotion rivals Shrewsbury Town and play-off chasers Charlton Athletic, Paul Cook's side lead the division, two points ahead of Salop and five points clear of third place Blackburn Rovers.

Northampton Town host Latics for the first time since April 2003 and they arrive back home following a 3-1 defeat on the road at Portsmouth.  Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side are deep in the relegation battle and keen not to drop back into League Two.

POSITION

Latics – 1st
Northampton Town – 22nd

Latics start 2018 as Sky Bet League One leaders, but following back-to-back goalless home draws the gap has been cut to just two points by second place Shrewsbury Town who won 2-1 away at Southend United at the weekend.  Blackburn Rovers failed to capitalise, being pegged back twice by fellow promotion chasers Scunthorpe United.  The pair remain five and seven points behind respectively.

The Cobblers are struggling in League One, five points from safety after their 3-1 defeat on the road at Portsmouth.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

League: Latics 16 wins, Northampton 5 wins, 12 draw – scored 48, conceded 28

Latics’ away record: 6 wins, 7 draw, 3 defeat – scored 22, conceded 15

Northampton haven’t scored a goal against Latics in their last five attempts, including September’s meeting at the DW Stadium which saw former Cobbler Michael Jacobs rifle in a late winner to down his hometown club.

Latics’ most recent visit to Sixfields came back in April 2003, when Nathan Ellington and Andy Liddell pushed Paul Jewell’s side a step closer to promotion from Division Two during the title winning 2002-03 campaign.
