Report from the DW Stadium where Wigan Athletic were held to a 0-0 draw by Charlton Athletic.
- Match Report: Wigan Athletic 0 – 0 Charlton Athletic
- Latics now unbeaten in nine in all competitions
- Fourth consecutive clean sheet for Paul Cook’s side
Wigan Athletic will enter 2018 as Sky Bet League One leaders after being held to a 0-0 draw by Charlton Athletic at the DW Stadium on Friday evening.
Samy Morsy hit the post late on for Latics, who also went close through Nick Powell, Will Grigg and Ivan Toney, though Karlan Ahearne-Grant almost stole it at the death on the break for Karl Robinson’s Addicks.
Callum Elder replaced Reece James in the only change from Boxing Day’s stalemate with Shrewsbury Town.
Latics’ earliest chance in the game came through Grigg, who headed off target when really he should have beat Ben Amos at close range after a whipped delivery from Lee Evans.
At the other end, Johnnie Jackson almost scored as he attacked Ahearne-Grant’s cross at the near post but couldn’t make a significant connection.
As half-time approached, a moment of sheer quality from Powell almost got Latics in front as the ball fell to him on the volley 30 yards out after a set-piece and he forced a smart save from Ben Amos.
However, Ahearne-Grant may have had the best chance of the half in stoppage time as he saw the ball fall fortunately into his path but fired wide of Christian Walton’s near post on the half volley.
Early in the second-half save, Morsy forced a save from Amos before Ahmed Kashi fired over at the other end.
The Addicks then dangerously broke through Ahearne-Grant and he rounded Walton before seeing his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by Dan Burn.
Powell then headed narrowly off target before a Jacobs drive was well-saved again by Amos, with Evans then having a penalty appeal turned down as he attacked the area following a knock-down from Ivan Toney, whose introduction sparked a more direct approach from Cook’s side.
From another Toney knock-down, Grigg was almost in again as the final ten minutes beckoned.
However, at the other end Ahearne-Grant’s pace caused problems and he raced in behind to shoot narrowly off target at Walton’s near post – a collective sigh of relief from the DW Stadium.
Morsy almost grabbed the winner in stoppage time, though, as his 20-yard effort was deflected onto the post before flying across goal and behind for a corner.
It wasn’t to be for Latics, though, who now focus their attentions on their New Year’s Day match at Northampton Town, looking to follow up recent impressive away wins at AFC Wimbledon and Oxford United.
