Two goals from Will McGuffie and one each for Victor Maffeo and Tylor Golden saw Latics edge a seven-goal thriller against Morecambe to book their place in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup semi-final against Burnley.

A spirited performance on both sides provided and entertaining 4-3 victory for Latics at Christopher Park on Tuesday afternoon, with McGuffie’s second earning progression 10 minutes from time.

Spanish full back Maffeo opened the scoring from the penalty spot inside 18 minutes after Charlie Jolley was upended in the area.

The Shrimps soon had a response when forceful work down the right side was bundled in by Kyle Hawley.

McGuffie had Latics back in front with his first of the game shortly before half time, Joe Downey the architect with a dangerous corner into the area, before a triple header, first from Jolley and then Anthony Plant, allowed McGuffie to nod home for 2-1.

Flying right full back Golden extended Latics’ lead to 3-1 shortly after half time.  Maffeo won possession back high up the pitch, allowing Golden to retrieve the ball, cut inside his man from the right and fire a left footed effort beyond the Morecambe stopper.

The visitors weren’t for giving up, and they found their way back into the game when a ball across Latics’ area was unfortunately turned into his own goal by Brad Roberts.

Morecambe were level shortly after through Nathan Dutton, who struck first time through bodies in the penalty area to make it 3-3.

Latics’ determination to succeed got them through this difficult task when McGuffie grabbed his second almost instantaneously, heading in a Downey corner for 4-3.

Nick Chadwick’s side were made to work hard for their place against Burnley in the semi-final, defending long passes and high throw ins for the remaining 10 minutes to see out the win.
