Wigan Athletic’s development squad progressed to the Central League Cup final on Tuesday afternoon as they won 5-3 on penalties against Chesterfield at the Spireites’ Proact Stadium.
The initial 90 minutes had finished 1-1 after Joel Phillips cancelled out Luke Burgess’ opener for Latics.
After Burgess opened the scoring for Peter Atherton’s side, Latics couldn’t make their dominance pay and found themselves level at 1-1 when Phillips drew Chesterfield back.
Sam Cosgrove, Tom Powell, Shane Donaghey, Josh Gregory and James Barrigan scored from the spot as Latics won 5-3 to set up a final with Fleetwood Town – date, time and venue to be confirmed.
