The pair visited pupils in year four at Garswood Primary School on Wednesday afternoon

Wigan Athletic first team players Stephen Warnock and Dan Burn joined in with the fun with pupils in year four at Garswood Primary School on Wednesday afternoon as they took part in a Premier League Primary Stars session.

The pair, who were joined by over 30 pupils, helped the children to improve their throwing and catching with a variety of different engaging activities before signing autographs and posing for photographs.

Premier League Primary Stars is a programme that sees specialised coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust help to upskill and mentor 80 primary school teachers in P.E, and provide over 50 schools with up to 70 hours of free coaching.

Latics captain, Stephen Warnock, said: “Community visits such as this one are just fantastic, I think myself and Dan had more fun than the pupils so it’s always great to be able to give something back. The kids were made up and you could see that they were really engaging with the coaches.”

Premier League Primary Stars is a national programme that uses the appeal of professional football clubs to improve and enhance P.E and other curriculum areas in primary schools, and develops skills and values that are crucial to success in later life.

Debra Aldridge, classroom assistant at Garswood Primary School, said: “I’ve been upskilled fantastically by coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust. It’s been really beneficial for me because it encourages me to use other skills too to help the pupils.

She added: “The visit from Stephen and Dan was just amazing. It was a pleasure to have them at our school because they not only inspire the pupils, they also put smiles on their faces which for us is the most important aspect of it all. We want them to enjoy as much as possible.”
