Latics’ under-18s back to winning ways in the EFL Youth Alliance in five-goal thriller.
- Report: Morecambe U18 3 – 5 Latics U18.
- Tom Powell double helps Latics to 5-3 win over the Shrimpers.
- Powell now joint top-scorer in the EFL Youth Alliance.
Wigan Athletic’s under-18s made it four matches unbeaten with a 5-3 win at Morecambe on Saturday afternoon.
In a dominant performance, a Tom Powell double and strikes from Callum Lang, Sam Stubbs and Shane Donaghey helped Nick Chadwick’s side to the win, though Morecambe put up a good fight and scored three goals of their own with Olly Tyler, Paul Dawson and Kyle Hawley scoring.
Latics were ahead inside the first minute when a loose pass back to the defence was latched onto by Lang, who drove into the space and shot to the keeper’s left on the edge of the box.
Seven minutes later, Lang turned provider as he ran in behind down the channel from a ball slid through by Anthony Plant and crossed for Powell, who poked home from four yards.
Tyler then made it 2-1 with a goal back for Morecambe but the two-goal advantage was soon restored as Powell grabbed his second of the afternoon and 12th of the season following good play from Chris Merrie that allowed Matty Taylor to cut the ball back into Powell’s path.
Again Morecambe replied, with Dawson on the mark for 3-2 but Stubbs dealt a killer blow on the hour mark as he poked home from Donaghey’s corner after his initial header had been blocked for his first goal of the season.
Hawley bagged a neat lob to set up a tense finish with the game at 4-3, but Donaghey won it for Chadwick’s side late on as he scored from a free-kick.
Latics may feel they should have won the game more comfortably, but another positive result was much welcome as the under-18s continued their recent good run of form.
Latics: Perrin, Plant (Golden 84), Taylor, Forecast, Stubbs, Donaghey, Burgess, Merrie, Powell, Lang, Cotter (Rhoden 83).
