Wigan Athletic manager Warren Joyce gave his views to Latics Player HD prior to the visit of Sheffield Wednesday.

WJ ON TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY
“It was a hectic day on Tuesday. We had targets but those targets were changing throughout the day. There were players we asked about at other clubs but they were completely out of our price range or that clubs didn’t want to let go. We were always going to get that though when people knew we were going to sell Yanic for a lot of money.

“We’ve signed a mixture of players really, some are for now, some are here to develop for the future, so we’ve got a nice blend and it’s all about trying to rebuild the club.

“We’ve managed to sign some really good players and the wage bill has gone down too, so it’s been a plus all the way through the window for us.

WJ ON GABRIEL OBERTAN
“Gabby was one of those signings that came out of the blue really. He was on his way to either Crystal Palace or a top French club, and I had no way of contacting him so he phoned me and asked if he could come here. He’s on what is probably the smallest wage he’s ever had in his life and he just wants to try and help this football club, which is a massive plus. To have a player of his stature at 27 years of age desperate to come and play is a credit to him. We’ve got to get his fitness up a little bit because he’s not done a lot for the past three to four weeks due to the winter break in Russia, but he’s a great signing for us on a free transfer.

WJ ON OMAR BOGLE
“Omar is one for the future. If you’re after centre forwards you’d rather have hungry ones who want to prove themselves at this level because we’re priced out of moves for strikers at the top end of this division. Omar is desperate to come and play and prove himself at Wigan Athletic.

WJ ON TEAM SELECTION FOR SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
“The lads that have been playing recently have done a great job for the club. They’ve shown a good tactical understanding and we’ve played some really good football against good sides. The players we have all work their socks off for this football club and they’ve got to keep doing that. I’ve got players chomping at the bit for a chance and training was very good on Wednesday.

WJ ON PLAYERS COMING BACK FROM INJURY
“We’re taking our time with Reece James and Alex Gilbey. We gave Reece a bit of a boost by putting him in the other day because he’s put so much hard work in over the past year, but he’s still a way off what his true fitness is. It’s good to have them both back involved with the group again.

WJ ON SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
“They’re a top side who have spent a hell of a lot of money in this league. We’ve come out of this window having spent probably a million pounds and brought in lots of quality players. They expect to get promoted so it’s going to be a really tough game for us.

WJ ON BELIEF IN THE SQUAD
“There’s been consistency in our performances throughout really, but we’ve obviously had a few hiccups in results at times. We’ve got to make sure we eradicate mistakes during the second half of the season because that’s the bit that’s killed us during the period where we lost games.

WJ ON THE FANS
“The amount of noise the fans made at Manchester United was incredible. We certainly need their help. They’ve got a massive part to play between now and the rest of the season, but we’ve all got to be together in achieving our aim because it is going to be difficult. The players are definitely up for it and the new lads are desperate to impress.
