Wigan Athletic loan signing Callum Connolly was left to reflect on a dream debut as his two goals on debut, just hours after signing for the club, secured a 2-0 win at Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon.
England youth international Connolly, who arrived from Goodison Park on a deal until the end of the season, told Latics PlayerHD:
“I can’t really describe how today made me feel; we knew it was going to be a six-pointer and the gaffer reminded us of that in the changing rooms before the game.
“It is all a bit of a blur but I got on the end of Stevie’s cross for the first goal and luckily it went in. It was a great feeling celebrating in front of the fans where my family were too.
“I heard my new song after the goal in the second-half and it gave me a great boost of confidence.!
Discussing his move, Connolly added that manager Warren Joyce played a big part in him joining Latics.
“I got the call up on Thursday morning, I shot down the motorway, had a couple of days of preparation with the lads and settled in well - the lads and gaffer have been great with me.
“The gaffer was at United last season and he has seen a lot of me in the last couple of seasons and liked me so I am just glad that I performed on my debut
“I would like to think of myself as a versatile and hard-working player who just wants to do well for the team.”
Connolly is likely to make his home debut when Brentford visit the DW next week, and he’s confident Latics will build on the win at Burton and secure their Championship status come May.
“Brentford will be a big game,” he said. “The gaffer said to me when I arrived here that it will be a tough run now but our vision is to stay up and that’s what we have to try and do.
“I believe that we have the belief, quality and the character to do that.”
