Wigan Athletic have signed England Under 19 defender Callum Connolly on loan from Everton until the end of the season.

The 19 year old signed in time to be included in the match-day squad as Latics travel to The Pirelli Stadium to play Burton Albion this afternoon and manager Warren Joyce has no doubts he is capable of stepping into action.

He said: “We thank Everton for giving us the opportunity to take Callum on loan and help us at this time in that right back position.

“He is a versatile defender who can also play centrally and having tracked his progress over the past year, we feel he is ready. He has great energy and is a defender’s defender. We are confident he can make a good contribution to the group.”

Liverpool-born Connolly is highly regarded at Goodison Park having progressed through the club’s academy and this will be his second loan spell after spending a month with Barnsley last season. He started all three of the games when he was there before returning to Everton and making his Premier League debut under Roberto Martinez for the Toffees against Southampton.

He will wear the Number 12 for Wigan Athletic.
