Coaches delivered the sessions to teachers at Our Lady Aspull and St Luke's Primary Schools

Wigan Athletic Community Trust coaches recently delivered theory and practical based activity sessions to 20 teachers and teaching assistants at Our Lady Aspull and St Luke’s Primary Schools as part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme.

The purpose of the sessions were to give teachers a better understanding of the principles of differentiation and the different methods and tools that can be used to carry out assessment of learning and assessment for learning on their pupils.

Staff from Wigan Athletic Community Trust visit both schools on a weekly basis to deliver PPA provision, after school clubs and the Premier League Primary Stars programme.

The Premier League Primary Stars programme sees specialised coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust help to upskill and mentor 80 primary school teachers in Physical Education and provide over 50 schools with up to 70 hours of free coaching.

John Rushton, Head Teacher at Our Lady Aspull School, said: “We think the session we’ve had with coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust will be really, really positive to us, and hope now that all staff and teaching assistants will be able to lead exercise and lead activities with our pupils.

He added: “The link between ourselves and Wigan Athletic Community Trust is very, very strong because the staff who visit our school are more than willing to listen to us. We’ve had a fantastic relationship for a number of years and they’ve always met our needs.”

Gareth Nolan, Schools Services Manager for Wigan Athletic Community Trust, said: “The workshops we deliver have been designed in partnership with current Primary School teachers to make sure the ideas and messages we put across are easily transferable into their P.E lessons.

He added: “We’ve delivered six workshops to five different schools in the area so far, and have worked with over 40 teachers. The feedback we’ve received has been excellent and we will continue to liaise with schools to ensure we are meeting their needs.”
