Wigan Athletic have signed Manchester City’s Republic of Ireland U-21 midfielder Jack Byrne on a three and a half year contract, subject to EFL and FA clearance.
The 20 year-old was a late signing on transfer deadline day, but it is one manager Warren Joyce is delighted with: “Jack is one for the long-term,” he said, “a really hungry player who we feel can develop here over the next few seasons, a real talent.”
Byrne became available after being recalled from his loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, during which he faced Latics at the DW Stadium earlier this season, making seven appearances in all competitions.
He joined Manchester City’s Academy at the age of 15 before progressing through the ranks and earning a professional contract at The Etihad Stadium. He spent last season on loan at Dutch Eredivisie side Cambuur, scoring four goals in 27 appearances.
Although not capped at full international level, he has trained with Martin O'Neill's squad.
