Late Wrexham goal prevents under-18s from back-to-back wins.
- EFL Youth Alliance Report: Wrexham U18 1 – 1 Latics U18.
- Joe Downey gave Latics the lead before Jamie McColl levelled for the Red Dragons.
- Four points from last two games for Nick Chadwick’s side.
Wigan Athletic’s under-18 side drew 1-1 at Wrexham on Saturday morning as their EFL Youth Alliance campaign continued with a trip to Wales.
Nick Chadwick’s side were controversially pegged back from a Jamie McColl free-kick five minutes from time after Joe Downey had given Latics an early lead.
In a different type of game to that Chadwick’s side are accustomed to, where the bobbly pitch saw both teams offer a more direct approach, Latics did see the majority of the ball and created good chances, albeit Tom Powell, Callum Lang and Mwiya Malumo all missed good one v one opportunities against Wrexham goalkeeper Dane Rigby.
Latics’ opening goal came from Downey after Lang latched onto a mistimed header and powered his way into the box before squaring to Powell, whose effort was parried away by Rigby only for Downey to react first to the rebound and finish left footed.
A lot of stoppages for fouls and free-kicks prevented Latics from gaining momentum and they could also feel hard done to when both Shane Donaghey and Lang were denied shouts for penalties.
The leveller came from a free-kick 20 yards from goal which went straight through Charlie Forecast and goalkeeper Theo Roberts, with Latics still aggrieved by the decision to award the hosts the free-kick in the first place.
Latics: Roberts, Plant, Golden (Taylor 62), Stubbs, Forecast, McGuffie, Downey (Gelhartd 83), Donaghey, Powell (Malumo 77), Lang, Cotter.
Subs: Perrin, Baningime.
