Nick Chadwick’s under-18 side followed up the disappointment of their FA Youth Cup defeat to Southampton by producing a resounding victory over Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon.

Two first-half goals from Luke Burgess, and an own goal from Shrewsbury’s goalkeeper Cameron Gregory, gave Nick Chadwick’s side a comfortable half-time lead after the Shropshire outfit had also had Ryan Sears sent off on 27 minutes.

Callum Lang added gloss to the score-line in the second-half in a dominant display from Chadwick’s side.

On an afternoon when Latics kept the ball moving well, showed patience in possession and created many opportunities against their deep-lying opponents, Chadwick’s side took the lead as top goal-scorer Tom Powell latched onto Tyler Golden’s throw-in down the line and cut-back for Burgess to finish first time.

Shrewsbury then had Sears sent off on 27 minutes for an elbow in the face in the build up to a corner, and after that Latics dominated the game further as Shrewsbury sat off and invited pressure.

The second goal came after Joseph Downey's pass should have been intercepted by a Shrewsbury defender, though he slipped leaving Burgess to run clean through and finish for his first second goal of the day and also his second of the season.

It was 3-0 on half-time when Matty Taylor's overlapping run finished with a cross that was tipped onto the bar by Shrews keeper Gregory, though it bounced back off the post and went in off the unfortunate goalkeeper’s back.

Powell was again the provider for Latics’ fourth goal early in the second-half after he met a Taylor pass down the wing and beat a couple of defenders for pace before chipping the ball over to the far post for Lang to side foot volley home from six yards.

Latics: Roberts, Golden (Randell 87), Taylor, Hilton, Forecast, Donaghey (Rhoden 58), Downey (Cotter 68), Merrie, Powell (Malumo 68), Lang, Burgess (Plant 87).
