Wigan Athletic are delighted to confirm that Mick Rathbone and Andy Welsh have joined the first team football staff, while academy goalkeeping coach Dan Connor has been made a permanent member of the first team staff.

Rathbone will lead the club’s existing medical team in charge of sports science, injury prevention and rehabilitation and all medical matters.

Andy Welch has been appointed as Head of Coaching and joins us from Sunderland Football Club. He will work alongside manager Warren Joyce in a newly-created role with responsibility for all first team and under 23 coaching.

Dan Connor has been appointed permanent goalkeeping coach after stepping up to the role from his previous post of academy goalkeeping coach.

The former Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Halifax Town defender Mick Rathbone is vastly experienced in his field, having spent many years as Everton’s Head of Sports Medicine, as well as working for England, Manchester United’s Academy, Preston North End and Blackpool.

He is looking forward to the challenge of joining up with Warren Joyce and Latics. “Everything is right about the club in terms of how we are set up,” he said, “and what I can bring is my extensive experience to the team. Injuries are part and parcel of any elite sport, and the medical department needs to be as driven in terms of rehabilitation and injury-prevention. Both Warren and I have a deep-rooted belief that a player’s personality, lifestyle and background have a constant effect on his performance and it’s about treating the person as well as the player.”

Andy Welsh joins Wigan Athletic from his position as Sunderland’s Under 23 Head Coach, which he has held since 2012. Originally from the North West, he has a reputation as being one of the finest coaches in the game having worked at Manchester City, Manchester United and Leeds United previously.

He coached alongside Warren Joyce during his time with Manchester United and at Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

He said: “Warren is someone I know very well and we share the same philosophy and ideas in terms of coaching. I am delighted to be joining Wigan Athletic, there is an excellent group of players here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Dan Connor has been with the club as academy goalkeeping coach since January 2014, joining  from Shrewsbury Town, having finished his playing career at Hereford United.  Born in Dublin, Dan began his career at Peterborough United and made his debut at 17 but his career was hampered by a number of serious injuries. He remained at London Road until moving back to Ireland to join Cork City, Drogheda United, Waterford United, and St Patrick’s Athletic, before joining Hereford.  He was capped at Republic of Ireland Under 21 and Senior B Level.
