Wigan Athletic have signed Brighton & Hove Albion’s England youth international goalkeeper Christian Walton on loan for the 2017-18 season.
A number of clubs have been vying for the services of the highly-rated Truro-born 21-year-old once it was made clear that Albion would loan him out again, and manager Paul Cook is delighted that he has joined Latics.
“Following the departure of Matt Gilks it was clear we needed reinforcements in this area and Christian is one that we were keen to target,” Cook said.
“’He had good experience in League Two and League One last season and has the potential to develop into a top goalkeeper.”
Walton actually made his Football League debut against Latics in a 1-0 victory for The Seagulls at the Amex Stadium in November 2014, where he was voted man of the match.
He had short spells on loan at Bury and Plymouth Argyle in 2015-16, in fact playing for the Shakers in their League Cup victory at the DW Stadium in September 2015. He then played 27 times for Luton Town on loan in 2016-17 before finishing off last season at Southend United.
