- Match Report: Notts County 1 – 2 Latics
- Callum Lang grabs a 69th minute winner after Richard Duffy own goal levelled in the second-half for Latics.
- Lewis Alessadra had given the hosts a first-half lead.
Wigan Athletic record their first win of pre-season as Callum Lang fired home a 69th minute winner at Meadow Lane against League Two Notts County.
Lang’s special moment came after Richard Duffy’s own goal from the academy graduate’s cross had cancelled out Lewis Alessandra’s first-half opener for the Magpies.
A Latics side captained by David Perkins started brightly with Michael Jacobs going through on goal before being brought down by Duffy as he entered the penalty area. A controversial early moment but referee James Adcock wasn’t interested.
Omar Bogle and Gavin Massey both headed wide before the hosts took the lead; Alessandra finishing powerfully at the far post beyond Christian Walton after a good ball from Terry Hawkridge.
Jacobs was again the beneficiary of another golden chance after Alex Gilbey had an effort saved by Adam Collin; the Latics forward heading over after a lovely deep cross from Sam Morsy.
As half-time approached, Omar Bogle was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty after beating his man on the right of the box and then being brought down as he looked to pull the trigger at the near post.
The Magpies then had an early second-half goal disallowed for a foul by Shola Ameobi on Jordan Flores as the former Newcastle man headed in at the back post.
Following a flurry of substitutions around the hour mark, Latics levelled as Lang broke in down the right and crossed for Jacobs, who was beaten to the ball by Duffy, who could only watch as he beat his own keeper Collin.
Five minutes later and Latics were ahead as Lang powerfully finished at the back post after a cross from trialist Noel Hunt – a great moment for the academy graduate and he celebrated with good friend Luke Burgess and Jacobs.
Lang was full of confidence and shot from range moments later before Paul Cook and his side were thankful to goalkeeper Walton, who produced two smart stops to deny Matt Tootle in the closing stages.
