Club saddened to learn of the death of former goalkeeper Cyril Unsworth.
Wigan Athletic were saddened to learn of the death of former player Cyril Unsworth last week, at the age of 89.
Goalkeeper Cyril made his Latics debut shortly after the Second World War, at the age of just 17 as Latics won 4-1 against Northwich Victoria at Springfield Park in the Cheshire League.
Cyril’s early form for Latics saw the club allow fellow goalkeeper Lionel Littler to leave on a free transfer and he went on to make 16 appearances in total for the club – never losing in his six appearances at Springfield Park.
Cyril, who had trials with Bolton Wanderers, had played for Ross Works in the Sunday School League and also for Kitt Green before playing for Latics.
His funeral will take place on Wednesday 2 August at 1.45pm at Orrell Methodist Church, and then 3pm at St Helens Crematorium.
Our thoughts are with Cyril’s wife Nellie, all of his family and friends at this time.
With thanks to Jeff Rourke for his assistance in producing this tribute to Cyril.
