- Bogle: “I am buzzing to go back to Grimsby and it will be a good test for us”
Wigan Athletic striker Omar Bogle is excited to return to Grimsby Town on Saturday, when Latics complete their pre-season schedule at Blundell Park.
Bogle scored 38 goals in 18 months with the Mariners, helping the club to win promotion to the EFL via the play-offs in 2016 and also to the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley.
Speaking ahead of his return, Bogle – who celebrated his 24th birthday on Wednesday – said:
“I am buzzing to go back; everyone knows how much the fans love me and how much I love them so I am buzzing to go back for what will hopefully be a good reception for me. We had a great relationship and I have a lot of good memories at the club.
“They’re a good team; they did well last year after coming up and, for a large part of the season, being in contention for the play-offs before falling off just before the end. I expect them to build on that this year so it’s a good test for us.”
Discussing his pre-season so far, Bogle, who spent the final two months of last season on the sidelines before a return on the final day against Leeds United, added:
“It’s been going good; hard as always, like every pre-season because it is always difficult when you first come back, no matter how much work you do away from the club when you’re off over the summer.
“It’s all needed, though, for what is a big season ahead.
“The gaffer has worked us hard; he’s come in and is trying to put his philosophy over to us and we’re still building on it but it’s looking good with each training session and each game we’re taking what he is trying to implement on board.”
“I think there have been a lot of positives in the games we have played; the only performance we have probably been disappointed with was the Southport one – we were disappointed with our quality in that game.
“However, from the game we have had here [against Crewe], the Liverpool game and the Notts County match, we have taken a lot of positives from.”
The game against Bogle’s former League Two employers finalises Latics’ pre-season campaign before Paul Cook’s side kick-off the league programme with a trip to MK Dons on Saturday 5 August.
And Bogle is looking to hit the ground running:
“I am looking forward to it,” Bogle continued. “My aim is to do the same as I did at Grimsby last season and that’s scoring goals at the start of the season, enjoying my game with my confidence flowing and carry that through the whole season – the team will benefit from that as well.”
