COOK ON RESULT
That wasn’t a bad start at all, you have to respect the quality and the power of a club like Liverpool but I thought tonight we were excellent, the young lads got great experience, the senior players got more minutes. Really good start for our lads and I thought we gave Liverpool a good game.”
COOK ON A NEW CHAPTER
It's great for Alex to get his goals and we have to wipe away the memories of last season. Promotions and relegations happen in club histories but now it’s a new chapter for us, for the club, for myself as Wigan manager and for the players and it’s about trying to be as positive as we can be in every game and taking the game to the opposition.
COOK ON POSITIVITY
It’s great to see the players enjoying themselves and this club has got such a great history as a result of what the Whelan family has done over the years. We’ve had a league winning team, an FA Cup winning team a team competing in Europe and it’s important we keep our feet level on the ground. We don’t want to come out of this game and go to Southport on Tuesday night and get beaten. Football can do that if you’re not careful. So we’re really pleased with how the lads have worked tonight and we move on to training tomorrow and keep working hard.
COOK ON WORK ETHIC
I don’t like to single players out individually because there were a lot of good individual performances. We created three really good chances in the first half against a very strong Liverpool and it’s the collective spirit that will get us results throughout the season.
