  • Grigg: “Brilliant to be back out there with the boys.”

Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg was delighted to be back in action on Saturday afternoon as Latics drew 1-1 at Grimsby Town.

Grigg was a half-time substitute, replacing goal scorer Callum Lang at the break at Blundell Park.

And he was delighted to put some minutes in the tank:

“It was brilliant to be back out there with the boys,” Grigg said. “It was a good exercise and for me to get 45 minutes was really pleasing.

“It’s been a long summer but I’ve been working hard and trying to get back to fitness. The physios have been great with me and I’ve been doing lots of work with them to get my strength up. This past week I’ve had four or five good training sessions so I’m feeling really good at the moment.

“I had a few chances myself today and I probably caught a couple of them too well, but it was just a great feeling to back out there more than anything.

“The manager and all the staff have been brilliant since they’ve come in. It’s been a positive place and he’s really kept us on our toes. If he doesn’t like something then he’ll tell us which is a positive.”

Grigg has watched on in pre-season whilst young striker Callum Lang has scored two of Latics’ four goals.

And the Northern Ireland international has been impressed with the academy graduate.

“Callum’s being doing really well and has been brilliant so far,” he added. “For a young lad, he’s taking his chances well and is impressing every game.”

Latics head to MK Dons on the opening day of the campaign, Grigg’s old stomping ground.

And he’s hoping to take his good record at Stadium MK with him this weekend.

“MK Dons is a nice scoring ground for me so it’ll be good to go back,” he continued. “I want to be in contention and want to start the game but I’ve just got to wait and see what happens."
