CLUB'S OFFICIAL CHARITY CYCLE TO AMSTERDAM FOR PROSTATE CANCER UK

8 June 2017

'Latics 2 Amsterdam are such a credit to Wigan Athletic' - Jeff Stelling

  • 29 riders are representing Latics 2 Amsterdam.
  • The group of Latics fans set fundraising target of £50,000.
  • Jeff Stelling's March for Prostate Cancer UK also departed from DW Stadium.

A team of 29 Wigan Athletic supporters left the DW Stadium on Thursday under the banner of Latics 2 Amesterdam - the club's oifficial charity partners for 2017-18 - and made their way to Barnsley for Friday’s Football to Amsterdam ride, where representatives from clubs across the United Kingdom will meet before cycling to the home of AFC Ajax in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.

Also departing the DW Stadium was TV pundit Jeff Stelling, who is currently taking part in Jeff’s March, a 400 mile fundraising walk from Exeter City’s St James’ Park to Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, also for Prostate Cancer UK.

Latics 2 Amsterdam currently top the fundraising leader board in the UK, having raised an incredible £44,000, with their target set at £50,000.

Peter Mulqueeney, Latics 2 Amsterdam rider, said: “The official ride starts in Barnsley on Friday, but as a team we’ve decided to extend that by a day by cycling there from the DW Stadium to meet up with all the other riders.

“I’ve been looking forward to this event for weeks, but I’m not sure I’ll have that same thought in a few days’ time, but I’m hoping for the best!

Jeff Stelling’s arrival at the DW Stadium was the seventh day of his gruelling walk, with today’s route taking him to Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United and Manchester City.

He said: “People have been fantastic wherever we’ve been and football clubs have treated us brilliantly, especially Wigan Athletic. At the end of the day, whether you’re on foot or on a bike, we’re all doing it for the same cause and all just want to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer. Latics 2 Amsterdam are a huge credit to the people of Wigan and Wigan Athletic football club.”

As part of Latics 2 Amsterdam’s ride, people are being urged to offer their support to the riders by taking part in a sponsored virtual cycle at the DW Fitness Centre on Stadium Way, where a bank of exercise bikes have been reserved. For more information, please click here.
