Latics defender to extend stay at the DW Stadium for a further two years.
- Craig Morgan signs two-year contract extension at Wigan Athletic.
- 31-year-old to remain at the DW Stadium until the summer of 2019.
- “The Chairman showed how much he wants to keep me, I want to repay that faith” - Morgan.
We are delighted to announce that experienced defender Craig Morgan has signed a new contract that will see him remain with the club until the summer of 2019.
Morgan, 31, has made 52 appearances in all competitions since signing from Rotherham United in the summer of 2015 and captained the side to the League One title last season, having also enjoyed back to back promotions for The Millers.
On signing his deal, Morgan said:
"I’m really happy to be committing myself, the chairman made it very clear he wanted me to stay and I think it’s right I should repay his faith. I’ve enjoyed my time here, and although this season has been a tough one, the club is built on solid foundations and I want to be a part of that moving forwards. If my experience can help in that regard, then that’s a good thing for everyone.
"The first task is to do everything we can to stay up this season, that has to be the focus and all the players are behind Graham (Barrow) and will continue to give everything.”
Chairman David Sharpe added:
"Craig is a top professional whose experience was a vital part of last year’s success and who will now be part of the backbone of the side for the next two seasons. We are delighted he has committed himself to us because every club needs players like Craig.”
Flint-born Morgan started his career with Wrexham, going on to play for MK Dons, Peterborough United and Preston North End, before joining Rotherham in 2012.
