Peter Atherton and John Doolan added to interim first team coaching staff

  • Peter Atherton appointed interim Assistant Manager.
  • John Doolan returns to club as interim first team coach.
  • Graham Barrow: “They’re both top professionals I know and trust.”
Wigan Athletic can confirm that Development Squad manager Peter Atherton has been made Interim Assistant Manager until the end of the season, while John Doolan has returned to the club in an interim first team coaching role.

Wigan-born Atherton came through the ranks as a player in the late 80s, going on to become Latics’ youngest ever captain, before an illustrious career, notching over 300 Premier League games at Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City, also playing at Birmingham City and Halifax Town.

He has been coaching at the Wigan Athletic Academy over the past five years, taking charge of the Under 16s, the Under 18s and the Under 21s.

John Doolan, who played for the club in the 90s including a spell under Graham Barrow, was part of the first team coaching staff under Uwe Rosler who made the play-offs and the FA Cup Semi-Final. In 2014, he had previously worked with the academy at Under 18 and 21 level. He left the club to become Assistant Manager to Alan Stubbs at Hibernian and Rotherham United.
