Alex Gilbey and Mikael Mandron joined in with a football session with pupils in Year 6

Gareth Doherty, Deputy Head Teacher at St Ambrose Barlow Primary School, described Alex Gilbey and Mikael Mandron’s recent visit as a ‘magical moment’ for their pupils.

The Latics duo joined in with a football session with pupils in Year 6, before offering support from the side lines as the children worked on their technique with coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust.

The Community Trust have worked with St Ambrose Barlow Primary School for the past five years, and have engaged with 162 pupils from Reception Class to Year 5 on a weekly basis this year.

Alex, said: “Obviously I’m not from this area originally, so it was nice to come out into the local community for the first time to see how football mad young people are up here. They’re all thriving to play the game and it’s great to see them getting involved from such an early age.”

The Community Trust work at the school three days a week to deliver the highest quality P.E sessions in line with the national curriculum.

Gareth, said: “This was an achievement for the Community Trust and ourselves to come together and really produce a special moment in time for these children. It was members of Wigan Athletic’s elite squad meeting St Ambrose Barlow’s elite squad, so it really was a truly magical moment for them.

He added: “The coaches from the Community Trust that come to our school are the best. They’re the finest quality professionals who execute lessons to a phenomenal standard. They create a sense of aspiration for the children, but it’s not only that because the relationships they build are absolutely outstanding. We’re lucky enough to have the finest coaches at our school every week.”

Harry Morrow, Year 6 pupil at St Ambrose Barlow Primary School, said: “It’s been a once in a lifetime chance for us. There are so many children out there who have never met a professional footballer let alone with play with them, so it’s been a great experience and we all loved it.”
