- Three Wigan Athletic players off on international duty during the March break.
- Crucial 2018 World Cup qualifier for Shaun MacDonald’s Wales against the Republic of Ireland.
- Callum Connolly selected for England’s U20 side and Sam Morsy heading off with Egypt.
Three Wigan Athletic players have been selected to represent their countries during March’s international break.
Midfielder Shaun MacDonald has been named in Chris Coleman’s Wales squad to face the Republic of Ireland in a crucial 2018 World Cup qualifier at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday 24 March.
Defeat for Wales would provide a huge blow to their qualification hopes for next summer’s World Cup in Russia whilst Ireland, who include former Latics James McCarthy and James McClean in their provisional squad, would open a healthy gap at the top of their group.
Elsewhere, Sam Morsy will represent Egypt as his country face Togo in an international friendly on Tuesday 28 March in the Borg El Arab Stadium.
After finishing runners-up in the recent African Cup of Nations, Morsy’s nation are now preparing for their World Cup qualifiers, which kick-off later this year when they face Uganda.
Finally, England U20 coach Paul Simpson has named on loan Everton defender Callum Connolly in his side for a seven-day tournament in France as preparations continue for this summer’s FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea.
England will play Portugal, France and Senegal between 23-28 March with Simpson using the matches to identify which players he wants to take to the final tournament.
