Defender says he's always wanted to extend his stay with Latics and praised the role of chairman David Sharpe in the deal.

  • Craig Morgan discusses signing his new Wigan Athletic contract.
  • Defender now set to stay with the club until the summer of 2019.
  • Morgan: "I've always made it clear that I wanted to stay here."
Morgan on his new contract…

“I’m delighted to have signed a new deal with Wigan Athletic. It’s what I’ve always wanted. I had a chance to move a couple of times in the past but chose not to because I made it clear I wanted to stay here. I’m just happy that it’s sorted now.

Morgan on this season…

“I’ve had a couple of unfortunate injuries this season and an infection too which kept me out for six weeks, so I’m disappointed I haven’t played as much this year but delighted to be a part of the end of this season and of course going forward into next year.

“It felt good to be back in against Aston Villa but unfortunately the result wasn’t what we wanted. The performance was better and I thought there were a lot of encouraging signs.

“We’ll go to Newcastle tomorrow with nothing to lose. We certainly haven’t given up and Graham hasn’t given up either, we’ll go to the end and assess it at the end of the season. We’re fully focused on staying up.

Morgan on chairman David Sharpe…

“I’ve sat down with the Chairman to discuss things, and like I say I could have left a couple of times but I didn’t feel like it was right to leave because I wanted to be here. I had good offers along the way which might have tempted a few people, but I made it clear to him at the start that it was here where I wanted to be. I want to be here until the end of my career.

“The Chairman and the people around this club realise what I did last season, and it’s been unfortunate for everyone that I haven’t been able to be involved as much as I’d have liked this year. It’s about moving forward now and hopefully the niggly injuries are behind me.

Morgan on Latics supporters…

“It’s always nice when you’ve got a good relationship with the fans, and they’ve been good to me since I’ve been here so I’d like to think that’s because I’ve given them good performances along the way.
