WIGAN ATHLETIC v LEEDS UNITED
SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP
SUNDAY 7 May 2017
Kick off 12.00pm
Latics Interim Manager Graham Barrow spoke to Latics Player HD in Advance of the final game of the season against Leeds United.
GB ON NOT BEING ABLE TO TAKE IT TO THE FINAL GAME
Once we won a couple of games against Rotherham and Barnsley we got the feeling that we could take it all the way, but results went against us. The players have given a great account of themselves, particularly in the last couple of games when we took the game to the opposition but just could find a way through.
GB ON PLAYERS
They’ve been great. I would only really question the Ipswich game in my short time in charge but that was down to individual mistakes. I’ve no complaints about their effort though, they’ve given me everything.
GB ON THE HUGE TASK HE HAD WHEN APPOINTED INTERIM MANAGER
A few more games would have been nice but it wasn’t to be. The sad thing was that we never had it in our control. If we had that then I think we could have cracked it due to our experiences of being in this sort of situation before. Things are still quite positive for us looking ahead to next year, though.
GB ON GOING DOWN TO LEAGUE ONE WITH OPTIMISM
We obviously know what League One is about having been in it only 12 months ago. It’s not easy and you can’t afford to lose too many games, but I think we’ll have the artillery to get back. We’ve got players who can certainly score goals in League One.
GB ON LEEDS UNITED GAME
When the away end is full of supporters it always adds to the atmosphere. I’ve got a lot of time for Garry Monk and Leeds football club, and it’s probably not a bad game to play in the sense there’ll be a good atmosphere and it’ll be a reminder to the players that it’s what we’ll want to get back to.
GB ON EXPERIMENTING WITH THE SQUAD
I feel that I’ve experimented and used the squad over the course of the games I’ve been in charge. There’s lads like Omar who should be busting a gut to play on Sunday now that he’s almost 100% fit. We’ve got one or two injuries anyway so I might involve some of the younger lads on the bench, and if possible get them on the pitch.
GB ON VISITING SHAUN MaCDONALD
When you visit Shaun you feel like its reverse roles because he’s picking you up. He’s an amazing character really. I met his fiancée when I went to see him and she’s just as lively and bubbly as him. They’re a lovely couple who are getting married in a few weeks and they’ve got so much to look forward to. He’s taken the injury better than anyone I’ve ever seen and I would say that Shaun MacDonald will be back out on that pitch earlier than you think.
