Latics thrash Morecambe to win Central League Cup group.

Burgess 15, 31
Plant 17
Merrie 28
Cotter 54
Downey 67

Latics hit Morecambe for six on Tuesday afternoon to progress into the knockout stages of the Central League Cup after coming from behind in the early stages at Christopher Park.

A first half double from Luke Burgess along with strikes from Anthony Plant and Chris Merrie saw Latics 4-1 up going into the break, before Jamie Cotter and Joe Downey rounded off the superb victory.

Latics fell behind after just three minutes when a long ball over the top got the better of the defence allowing the Shrimps to take the lead.

It wasn’t too long before Peter Atherton’s side had themselves level, Burgess grabbing his first goal of the game thanks to Divin Baningime’s powerful run and cut back down the left.

Two minutes later full back Anthony Plant met James Barrigan’s cross from the right to power home, Merrie made it 3-1 on the counter attack.  Barrigan and Burgess linked up down the right, the latter having a shot blocked in the area before playing a neat one-two with Merrie to finish.

Midfielder Burgess claimed his second shortly after the half an hour mark, again linking up with Merrie in the build-up before finishing from Tylor Golden’s cross.

Not long after the break Cotter rounded off a fine passing move to make it 5-1, with Thomas, Merrie, Burgess and Baningime all linking up.

Downey rounded off the scoring with little over 20 minutes left to play, curling home a stunning effort into the top left corner following clever link up between Barrigan and the impressive Burgess.
