Latics' eight-game winning run came to an abrupt end as they exited the FA Youth Cup at the Second Round stage at the hands of Bury.
Goals from Saul Shotton, Wealth Da Silva and Callum Hulme gave the visitors a three-goal lead, before Mwiya Malumo got a goal back for Nick Chadwick's side who, despite a poor start, almost got back into the contest late on after creating a number of chances.
Latics fell behind after just four minutes as Shotton finished from close range after Latics failed to clear from a set-piece.
It was 2-0 on 19 minutes when Da Silva burst from his own half to curl home with his left foot.
The third came early in the second-half when Callum Hulme fired home from the penalty spot.
Latics got a goal back as Malumo superbly finished on the volley soon after, but Victor Maffeo, James Berry and Mitchell Culshaw all couldn't beat Scott Moloney in the Bury goal.
Latics: Perrin, Plant, Golden (Berry 61), Hilton, Long; McGuffie (Weir 72), Downey; Culshaw (Jolley 78), Baningime, Maffeo; Malumo.
