- Match report: Latics vs Doncaster Rovers
- Michael Jacobs netted his fifth league goal of the campaign.
- Ryan Colclough scored in both halves.
Wigan Athletic bounced back from defeat at the weekend with a convincing win over Doncaster Rovers at the DW Stadium this evening.
Michael Jacobs netted the game’s opener with a sweet left footed finish on 40 minutes before Ryan Colclough added a second soon after to give Latics a two-goal cushion at the break.
Colclough was on target once again in the second half as he directed a header past Ian Lawlor at his near post.
There were four changes to the side that lost narrowly against Bradford City on Saturday, with Reece James, Lee Evans, Will Grigg and Colclough all starting.
Latics could have taken the lead as early as the first minute when Jacobs burst down the left and forced a smart save out of Lawlor.
Left back James later fed Grigg in behind the visiting defence however Darren Ferguson’s men cleared the threat.
Rovers’ first real opportunity came through James Coppinger, but Jamie Jones was equal to his effort as he pushed the ball behind from close range.
Evans then tested Lawlor from distance and in response John Marquis fired just over the bar from a free kick.
Latics took the lead five minutes before the break through Jacobs, who unleashed a low drive into the bottom corner.
The lead was doubled moments later as Colclough cut inside from the left and slotted past Lawlor from the edge of the box.
Colclough netted his second of the evening just shy of the hour mark when he connected with Jacobs’ cross to head home.
Marquis wasted a good chance for Rovers in reply, blasting wide inside the area, but Latics were full of confidence and could have added to their lead through Grigg at the back post.
Grigg had another opportunity to put the game beyond doubt but shot over, while Chey Dunkley denied Alfie Beestin superbly when played in on goal.
Substitute Gavin Massey’s deflected strike from the edge of the area nearly beat Lawlor late on but Latics returned to winning ways in fine fashion.
