iFollow Latics spoke to Alex Bruce on Monday morning, with the defender looking back on his goal at Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon as well as discussing his Emirates FA Cup memories ahead of Friday night’s trip to AFC Fylde.

Alex Bruce on his goal at Rotherham…

It was a bit off the cuff really; the header was fired in at me from the edge of the box and the touch just set me up really.

I thought it might come off, fortunately it did, it was a nice surprise but I have to say it was a bit of a fluke.

Alex Bruce on his overall performance and handling League One top goal-scorer Kieffer Moore…

Kieffer Moore is a big lad and a handful but I think Chey and myself were on form and we got the better of him on the day.

He has been a handful for a lot of defenders this year so to put in a good performance against him was nice.

Alex Bruce on reaction to defeat against Bradford City…

You are not going to go through a full season where you win every week; you will have little blips and Bradford was that for us.

The lads responded in the right way, it was a good result at Rotherham because it is a difficult place to go so long may that continue.

Alex Bruce on his FA Cup memories…

My second game in professional football was in the FA Cup; I was at Oldham on loan as a kid and we beat Manchester City 1-0.

I don’t know how we did – they battered us on the day – but we hung in there and we got the result, which was nice, and that was my first memory in the FA Cup.

I know we got beat in the final when I was at Hull but playing in an FA Cup final was something that will live with me forever.

The occasion, anyone will say the same, is what you play football for and if we can progress this year through the competition and go on a nice little run it would be great for the lads and the supporters as well.

Alex Bruce on the test AFC Fylde pose on Friday…

It will be a tough game; Fylde will be bang up for it and I am sure their supporters will be there to cheer them on and try to make it a banana skin for us – that is what all the lower league teams will do in the competition.

We have to go there and perform to our capabilities because, if we do, we should win the game and it is as simple as that.

Cup matches are always a little different – especially when you play a lower league team – because they have nothing to lose and we have.

Alex Bruce on enjoying life at Latics…

It is good here; there is competition for places and I think you find that in most teams at the top end of the league.

Chey and Dan have done very well and all I can do is play as well as I can when I get the call and hopefully I’ll keep my place.

There is a nice blend [of players] and I think that comes from the manager as well because he has used his experience to decide what kind of blend he wants in terms of taking the team forward. He has done a big job from where we were last year in terms of recruitment and I think he now has a nice size of squad with a nice balance to it and we are getting the rewards on the back of it.
