- Sarkic praises Jordan Roberts’ goal for Crawley
- Sarkic: “It was a difficult game for us especially as we went down early on to a great goal, but we showed a lot of character to come back.”
Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic felt Latics showed great character to come from behind to beat Crawley Town and secure their place in the second round of the FA Cup this afternoon.
Jordan Roberts gave Harry Kewell’s side an early lead with a sublime finish, but Ivan Toney levelled proceedings with a close-range strike after half an hour.
Lee Evans was the game’s match winner in the second half though, unleashing a thunderbolt from 25 yards which flew past visiting keeper Glenn Morris.
After the game, Sarkic said: “The lads are all very happy to have won today. It was a difficult game for us especially as we went down early on to a great goal, but we showed a lot of character to come back into the game and win it in the end.
“I did my best to try and stop their goal but it was an unbelievable strike. I did all I could but fair play to him for it.
“I don’t know where Lee’s goal has come from because he’s not one to shoot all the time! It was a great goal from him though.”
Sarkic admits he’s had to be patient over the past few weeks with Jamie Jones producing a number of impressive performances between the sticks.
“Jamie’s been doing well in goal and you don’t change a winning team so I’ve had to be patient and just wait for my chance. Hopefully I’ve impressed the gaffer today.”
He now hopes to stake a claim in the first team on a regular basis after settling in at the club well since his loan move from Aston Villa on deadline day in August.
I’ve settled in well and am enjoying it a lot. The lads are great and have welcomed me, so I’m just waiting for my chance in the team now to show what I can do.”
