Before tomorrow’s game against Blackburn Rovers, the club will be hosting its first Together Cup which will see over 120 people from under-represented groups in Wigan take part in a football tournament.
Hosted by Wigan Athletic Community Trust and delivered in partnership with Wigan Council and Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles, the event takes place at Robin Park Arena and will include teams from the Brick homeless charity, Kamosi Group, Leigh Genesis Refugee Football and Support for Wigan Arrivals Project.
In addition, Premier League Kicks teams from Blackburn Rovers will be taking part in the tournament. Kicks is aimed at young people aged 12-19 and uses the power of football and the value of sports participation to help hard-to-reach youngsters in some of the most high-need areas.
The tournament is part of the club’s Together programme, which highlights the work undertaken by Wigan Athletic Football Club, its registered charity Wigan Athletic Community Trust and the DW Stadium in promoting equality and diversity.
Tom Flower, Head of Community at Wigan Athletic Community Trust, said: "We're delighted to be able to give so many people from under-represented groups in Wigan the opportunity to play and take part in competitive football.
He added: “As an organisation we’re committed, fully supportive and proud of our Together programme of equality and diversity, and this tournament will be a highlight for the club.”
Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation, will also be delivering a workshop to those in attendance and all participants will be given tickets for the game at the DW Stadium.
Wigan Athletic Football Club, Wigan Athletic Community Trust and the DW Stadium are committed to respecting and promoting equality and diversity across all its activities through Together.
