Latics progress in the FA Youth Cup with good performance at the Globe Arena earning sixth consecutive win.

  • FA Youth Cup Report: Morecambe U18 0 – 4 Latics U18
  • Two Victor Maffeo penalties and goals from Will McGuffie and Mwiya Malumo secure dominant win
  • Latics will face Oldham Athletic or Bury in the Second Round

A superb performance from Wigan Athletic’s under-18 side saw them beat Morecambe 4-0 on Tuesday night at the Globe Arena.

Goals from Will McGuffie and Mwiya Malumo, either side of two Victor Maffeo penalties, earned a sixth consecutive win for Nick Chadwick’s side and progress to the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup.

It wasn’t always easy for Chadwick’s side on the night and they had to avoid early scares to win with a professional display.

Morecambe’s Kyle Hawley caused early problems with a shot which went narrowly over, before Tyler Brownsword should have done better with a close-range header for the Shrimps.

Latics punished those early mistakes, though, when McGuffie headed home from a corner after a strong Joe Downey effort was initially deflected wide.

The second came on the stroke of half-time when neat interplay between Divin Baningime and Malumo resulted in the latter being brought down in the area. Maffeo stepped up and fired the spot-kick past Morecambe keeper Ollie Jumeau.

Hawley again gave Latics an early scare in the second-half but, after Culshaw and Malumo had both again gone close, the game was put to bed just after the hour mark as Malumo was felled again in the area before Maffeo made no mistake from the spot.

The fourth came from a great near post finish from Malumo after a lovely run from U16 midfielder Jensen Weir, who came on as a second-half substitute.

A great team performance for the under-18s, who continue to impress in 2017-18.
