DW Stadium unbeaten run continues as Latics play out feisty stalemate with local rivals Blackburn Rovers

  • Latics extend unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions
  • Gavin Massey hit the post for Latics against ten men Rovers, who had Elliott Bennett sent off.

Latics extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games this afternoon after a stalemate with Blackburn Rovers at the DW Stadium.

After an even first half, the visitors were reduced to 10 men on the hour when Elliott Bennett received his second yellow card of the game.

Having won against Blackpool last weekend, manager Paul Cook named an unchanged side to the team that won 3-1 at Bloomfield Road seven days ago.

In a tight affair, neither side created any clear cut opportunities during the first period, but Chey Dunkley had to be alert to head away Craig Conway’s effort at the near post.

Ivan Toney later had penalty shouts waved away by the referee, while Michael Jacobs headed Callum Elder’s cross from the left just wide.

David Raya was then called into action to deny Gavin Massey from close range, and Nick Powell went close for Latics before the break but his strike went over.

Bradley Dack was a threat for Rovers at the start of the second half, firstly heading wide of the far post and then firing over from close range.

Bennett was given his second yellow card of the game for simulation just before the hour mark and received his marching orders from the referee.

With a man advantage, Latics were piling the pressure on Rovers as Elder, Toney and Max Power all had opportunities to take the lead.

Massey thought he had put his side ahead with 15 minutes to go but his shot from the edge of the box cannoned back off the post.

Despite a valiant effort and Powell and Dunkley doing their utmost to try and bundle a deep ball home at the back post, Latics were unable to find a way through the Rovers backline, and were made to settle for a point.
