  • Latics go top of Sky Bet League One with win over the Shrimpers

Wigan Athletic extended their winning league run to four games this afternoon as they beat Southend United at the DW Stadium.

Michael Jacobs, who missed out at Scunthorpe last weekend through injury, put Latics ahead after just eight minutes when his strike from distance deflected past visiting keeper Mark Oxley.

United were reduced to 10 men on the hour as Jermaine McGlashan was given a straight red card for a poor challenge on Callum Elder.

Nick Powell continued his fine form in front of goal with a second in the 84th minute before substitute Ivan Toney made it three moments later.

Manager Paul Cook made two changes to the side that beat the Iron 2-1 at Glanford Park seven days ago, with Jacobs and captain Samy Morsy returning.

Latics started brightly and were a threat down the right through Nathan Byrne, as he cut infield and saw an effort tipped over the bar by Oxley.

Jacobs had better luck soon after, though, as he shot from long range and beat Oxley via a deflection for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Powell then saw his volley from the edge of the box go over, while at the other end Theo Robinson burst down the left but shot off target.

Byrne was denied once again by Oxley later in the half after wonderful run, before Dru Yearwood wasted a good opportunity for Phil Brown’s men as Latics went into the interval ahead.

Oxley was called upon again at the start of the second period when Jacobs rode a couple of challenges in the box, only for the keeper to rush off his line to deny him from a tight angle.

Chey Dunkley then went close with a header from Max Power’s corner, while Jacobs was in the thick of the action again, this time forcing Oxley to hold well.

McGlashan was given his marching orders by the referee on the hour mark for a nasty tackle on left back Elder.

Powell doubled the advantage in the 84th minute when he latched on to substitute Roberts’ through ball and rounded Oxley to score.

The lead was extended four minutes later when Toney made no mistake from close range to ensure all three points for Latics.
