Paul Cook's side extend unbeaten run to five league games with draw in Kent.

  • Match Report: Gillingham 1 - 1 Wigan Athletic
  • Tom Eaves netted the game's opener early in the second half.
  • Captain Sam Morsy equalised with a stunning effort

Sam Morsy’s late equaliser maintained Latics’ unbeaten league run as they drew 1-1 against Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium this evening.

The Gills opened the scoring 10 minutes after the interval when Tom Eaves got on the end of Sean Clare’s cross and headed past Jamie Jones inside the box.

Captain Morsy levelled for Latics in the 80th minute when his superb strike from 25 yards beat Tomas Holy in the home goal.

Ivan Toney replaced Will Grigg in the starting XI in what was manager Paul Cook’s only change from Saturday’s win against Southend United at the DW Stadium.

Latics started the game on the front foot and could have gone ahead as early as the first minute when Max Power’s effort from outside the box went just wide.

Michael Jacobs was the next to have a go but he was denied by the home defence, while Nathan Byrne later went close but Holy saved well.

Dan Burn headed over from a corner, Byrne was thwarted once again and Jacobs dragged an effort wide from distance as chances continued to present themselves to Latics.

For the home side, Eaves was challenged brilliantly by Chey Dunkley when through on goal, and Josh Parker poked wide from a free kick.

Toney had an effort blocked well at the start of the second half, while Billy Bingham let fly from range for the hosts but shot over.

The home side took the lead in the 54th minute when Eaves got on the end of Clare’s cross from the right hand side.

Eaves was again involved moments later when he played Parker in on goal, but the winger shot off target from a good position.

Elliott List later saw an effort from close range deflect on to the post by Dunkley as the Gills looked to extend their lead.

Latics pressed for an equaliser and got their reward in the 80th minute when Morsy beat Holy with a fantastic strike from distance.

Substitutes Noel Hunt and Gary Roberts looked to cause problems late on but Latics couldn't quite find a winner.
