First year apprentices from Wigan Athletic Community Trust were recently given an exclusive tour of the club’s state-of-the-art training facilities.
The Trust’s Level 3 P.E and School Sport coaching apprenticeship, ran in partnership with Pro-Co, allows young people aged 16-18 to start their careers in the sports industry.
Latics boss Paul Cook helped to improve the apprentices’ knowledge of coaching by allowing them to observe a first team training session.
Adam Sherratt, Education Officer at Wigan Athletic Community Trust, said: “The visit was an eye-opener for the new apprentices as it gave them a real insight into how the club runs on a daily basis, but also how professional footballers train and keep themselves in the best possible condition.
He added: “On behalf of the apprentices I’d like to thank manager Paul Cook for giving of his time to pass on his vast coaching knowledge to the youngsters, and we now hope his messages to them will be taken on board and into their apprenticeships.”
A number of the Community Trust’s former apprentices have gone on to study a Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and Development at the University of South Wales following the completion of their apprenticeship, which has allowed them to develop the necessary skills, qualities and characteristics required to work within professional football clubs.
Paul Cook, Latics boss, said: “The apprentices were really eager to learn and their enthusiasm towards the game and coaching in general was refreshing. I hope they now go on to enjoy their time with the Community Trust and continue the excellent work being done by all of the staff.”
