SHREWSBURY TOWN v WIGAN ATHLETIC
MONTGOMERY WATERS MEADOW
SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
SATURDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2017
KICK OFF 3pm

PRE-MATCH BUILD UP
After missing a weekend due to international call-ups, it’s back to business for Paul Cook and his players on Saturday as Latics head to Shropshire to face in-form Shrewsbury Town, still unbeaten having won four from five in Sky Bet League One so far. They have won both home games at Montgomery Waters Meadow, against Northampton Town and Rochdale, and there’s no doubt that it will be a real test.

From Latics’ point of view, the only doubt surrounds the goalkeeping position, where Christian Walters is set to miss at least two months with a fractured tibia, which will see a league debut for one of Jamie Jones, Matija Sarkic or Owen Evans. Other than that, Samy Morsy and Lee Evans have come back fit from international duty and Cook will have a full squad to pick from.

OUR RECORD AT MONTGOMERY WATERS MEADOW / SHREWSBURY
The sides have only been paired together for five league seasons, and Shrewsbury has been a relatively happy hunting ground in the past, with only one defeat. Latics did the double over the Shrews the last time we shared a division, in 2015-16. The match at Shrewsbury ended up with an emphatic victory, as Latics hit top spot in League One, goals from Conor McAleny, Yanic Wildschut, Jason Pearce and a Will Grigg brace earning a 5-1 win.

MAJOR CONNECTIONS
Not so many connections in terms of players having played for both. Ivan Toney is the one current player who links both the squad, scoring six goals in 19 games for The Shrews last season.

Otherwise, recent players to have played for both are Jack Hendry and Fraser Fyvie, albeit only briefly at both. Then it’s a case of going back to the 90s when Kevin Sharp, Ray Woods and Tony Kelly had spells at both. In terms of Latics’ academy, both Academy Head Gregor Rioch and U18s coach Nick Chadwick are former Shrews players.
