  • Junior Morias with two and Jack Marriott score for Peterborough

Morias 46, 82

Colclough 86

A dramatic game ended in defeat at The Abax Stadium as Latics were undone by a late Jack Marriott goal.

After Michael Jacobs gave Paul Cook’s men a first half lead, Junior Morias’ second half double had turned the game on its head only for substitute Ryan Colclough to equalise late on before Marriott’s late winner.

Both sides had chances to score more, both keepers made saves, there were penalty appeals at both ends but the game ended in a second defeat of the season for Paul Cook’s men.

There were three changes going into the game, Nick Powell was back in place of Gary Roberts, David Perkins replaced the suspended Samy Morsy to make his first league appearance of the season and Will Grigg made way for Ivan Toney.

Latics went in a goal to the good at the break but it really should have been more. That said, Jamie Jones came to the rescue as he did against Northampton and pulled off a brilliant late save from Marcus Maddison.

Latics had two early chances in quick succession, both created by Powell. A great floating cross to the far post from the left side after six minutes found Toney but his header was straight at Jonathan Bond. A minute later, Powell sent Jacobs clear inside the box, he struck the ball with the outside of his boot ten yards out but Bond got down well to save.

Gavin Massey then blasted over the bar from the edge of the box after 15 minutes following a sweeping Latics move that ended with Reece James’ low cross from the left.

Powell managed to connect with Lee Evans’ corner after 24 minutes inside the box, but it wasn’t a clean header and the ball hit the ground before bouncing just over.

Then came the goal, after 32 minutes. Toney cut in from the right, the ball fell to Jacobs, who shot from inside the box, the shot taking a deflection and wrong-footing Bond to nestle into the corner of the net.

Bond then made two incredible saves in quick succession in the 37th minute, firstly blocking Toney’s effort before saving Massey’s shot on the line after an almighty scramble in front of him.

The hosts had just two significant efforts in the first half, Junior Morias headed just over when he met Maddison’s cross from the left after 16 minutes, then just on the stroke of half-time, Jones brilliantly saved at the feet of Maddison who had broken clean through.

They drew level in their first attack after the break, however, Morias seizing a loose ball inside the box and blasting home. Jones had no chance. Jack Marriott the shot a yard wide across the face of goal as Latics were pegged back.

Jones then pulled off another fantastic save after Marriott raced clear of Burn and shot from an angle after 57 minutes.

Max Power and Colcough replaced Powell and Massey after 63 minutes to try and halt the home side’s momentum but Marriott immediately had the home crowd claiming for a penalty after going down in a tussle with Chey Dunkley in the box.

Then Jacobs had another great chance having ran the full length of the field on the break after 67 minutes, creating the space to shoot but Bond denied him again.

But back came Peterborough, Maddison seizing on a long ball in the 71st minute in the box and Jones once more brilliantly denied him.

Back came Latics. Evans then had a 30 yard free-kick in the 75th minute which beat Bond’s outstretched finger-tips but went just over before Colclough appealed for a penalty in the 78th minute after going down in the area under a challenge.

The Abax Stadium was on its feet when Morias blasted home a loose ball in the box to give the home side the lead in the 82nd minute but Latics were level a minute later when Colclough found space at the far post to bundle home Evans’s corner

Latics’ joy was short-lived, however, as three minutes later, Marriott found turned in the box and fired home past Jones.
