PETERBOROUGH UNITED v WIGAN ATHLETIC
ABAX STADIUM
SKY BET LEAGUE ONE
SATURDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2017
KICK OFF 3.00pm

PRE-MATCH BUILD UP
Second meets third as Paul Cook’s Latics do battle with Grant McCann’s Peterborough United on Saturday. Both sides have lost just once in the league this season and Latics can regain top spot in Sky Bet League One should they win and Shrewsbury are beaten at home by Blackburn Rovers. Posh will climb back over Latics if they get the three points.

Since taking over from Graham Westley in April 2016, McCann has built really good momentum at the club. An 11th place finish last season created a stable platform from which the side have so far built this season.

Star player Marcus Maddison ended speculation as to his future by penning a new long-term deal at The ABAX on transfer-deadline day and is a threat, along with six goal Jack Marriott, signed from Luton Town in the summer and currently joint leader of the Sky Bet League One scoring charts.

Cook will leave it late to see if Nick Powell can return after missing Tuesday’s victory over Northampton, his inclusion would be the only likely change for Latics, barring injuries.

Latics have responded from defeat at leaders Shrewsbury Town in the perfect way, with three consecutive victories, scoring seven goals without reply. They were impressive against Charlton on their last away day and will go to the ABAX in confident mood.

Posh have also responded to a surprise defeat at home to Bradford City by beating MK Dons last Saturday at the ABAX, while Gwion Edwards’ second half equaliser at Walsall rescued a point on Tuesday to keep Posh in 3rd spot in the table, two points behind Latics.

OUR RECORD AT THE ABAX STADIUM
Latics won a dramatic game the last time the sides played at the stadium, in October 2015, Yanic Wildschut opening the scoring with a thunderous goal, before Will Grigg doubled the lead. Posh levelled through Erhun Oztumer and Souleymane Coulibaly in the 61st and 81st minutes but Max Power immediately put Latics back in the lead to seal a memorable win.

The ABAX/London Road has been a pretty good hunting ground for Latics over the years, with only one defeat in the eight games played there between the sides, 2-0 in February 2001. There have been three draws and, including the above game, four victories for Latics, dating back to December 1979, when goals from Tony Quinn and Tommy Gore earned a 2-1 win.
