WATCH: ANTHONY BARRY ON SUPERB CHARLTON WIN

13 September 2017

First Team Coach Anthony Barry reflects on a dominating display at The Valley.

  • Wigan Athletic beat Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One
  • Anthony Barry: “It was important we bounced back.”
  • “We were delighted for Gavin, we all celebrated with him”- Barry

Wigan Athletic Assistant First Team Coach Anthony Barry said the players gave the perfect response to the Shrewsbury Town defeat with a commanding performance against the in-form Addicks.

ANTHONY BARRY ON A ‘PERFECT’ AWAY PERFORMANCE
Well nothing’s perfect but after Saturday’s disappointment, it was important that we bounced back and it was a tough challenge because Charlton are a very good side, take nothing from them, but the lads were at it from the very first minute until the last

ANTHONY BARRY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF STARTING WELL
The message was to start well but there’s a pride within the group themselves, they felt they’d let themselves down on Saturday and there was definitely a feeling that they wanted to go and prove a point tonight. It was a tough game, we’ve got a tough block of fixtures coming up and tonight was a great start.

ANTHONY BARRY ON GAVIN MASSEY
We’re delighted for Gavin, we knew he had goals in him looking at his numbers from Leyton Orient. It’s been tough for Gavin to integrate within the group, it’s been a jump up in level but we 100% back him and we were pleased for him tonight.

ANTHONY BARRY ON CREATING CHANCES
We created a lot of chances, we took three but there were more that we could have converted. But it was a good night’s work, now we need to park it, rest up tomorrow, then we get back to work on Thursday.

ANTHONY BARRY ON HOME GAMES COMING UP
We’ve got a good block of home games coming up but there are no ‘gimmes’ we certainly won’t be taking anyone lightly, we need to focus on our own game and go into every match 100% and that will be our intention going forwards.

ANTHONY BARRY ON WILL GRIGG

It was important to be patient with Will after his injury, he’s been getting good minutes and it was nice to see him out there tonight. But we’ve got a good underbelly of players, Ivan Toney and Will can replace each other, we’ve seen Max (Power) tonight, we’ve got a great group of players and we trust every single one of them.

ANTHONY BARRY ON CELEBRATING
I might get a bit of stick for celebrating on the pitch but we were all so pleased for Gavin when that second one went in, he’s been working really hard on his finishing, we’re pleased for him and I was there emotionally with him to be honest.

ANTHONY BARRY ON THE FANS
One of the first thing the gaffer mentioned was the fans who came to support us all this way on a Tuesday night and we hope it was worth it with the performance.
