Wigan Athletic’s on loan Leicester City left back Callum Elder was delighted to record a 2-0 win over Walsall on his first home league start for the club.
Reflecting post-match with iFollow Latics, he said:
“It’s been a while since I last played 90 minutes but I’m delighted to get the win. We weren’t at our best but it was important we kept a rigid shape and stuck to our game plan. We showed quality when we needed to.
“We’ve got a really talented squad and know we can come up with the goods when we need to. The main thing to do when you’re struggling to find your rhythm in your game that you do stick to a shape and limit your opponents to limited opportunities.”
The win saw Latics collect another clean sheet and, as ruthless as Latics are going forwards, Elder spoke of his pride at the strong defensive record the club is boasting
“Jamie Jones has come in and done really well. He’s a calming influence behind us and commands himself well, and then on my side to have big Dan Burn next to me is a massive asset in the back four so it was an easy slot in for me today.”
On Latics’ impressive home record, Elder added:
“Teams fear coming here but in saying that it’s about us being able to grind out performances and pick wins up every week.
“It’s very early in the season but we’re happy with how things are going at home.”
