Latics midfielder and captain Samy Morsy says his side’s patience was rewarded as they beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 on Tuesday night and moved back into the automatic promotion places in Sky Bet League One.
Discussing the game post-match with iFollow Latics, Morsy said:
“You could see what Plymouth wanted to do and that was to get men behind the ball – I would love to see the possession stats and how many passes we have had.
“We were patient – Bristol Rovers were similar – and we kept our good habits and were confident the goal would come.
“We have a fantastic record here; but for the sending off we would have despatched them too so it is very promising.
“We are not far off going on a really good run; the gaffer has eluded to things that we can do improve on and things he is not happy with but once we get that right then I think we will go on a good run.”
And Morsy praised Latics’ supporters for how they stuck with his side:
“The fans were great tonight,” he added. “We have to accept that when teams play us it is their Cup final – without being disrespectful, Shrewsbury were celebrating away in the changing rooms and Peterborough did a lap round the pitch as well when they beat us and that’s how teams in this league see us. That’s great credit to us but we still have to be diligent enough and professional enough to carry out the job, keep our habits and do the basics well.”
Morsy has been working with Peter Reid at the Euxton Training Centre with the former England international passing on his knowledge to the midfielder.
And Morsy is thankful for the help he is receiving from Reid:
“He is a legend, especially in my position as well,” he added. “He has his stories and is brilliant to speak to; he is great for advice for me and a top man as well – it is great to have him here.”
