iFollow Latics caught up with goalkeeper Matija Sarkic on Thursday afternoon after he arrived at Euxton for the first time.

Watch the video above to hear what he had to say about the move!

Sarkic on signing for Wigan Athletic

“I’m very pleased by this move because I’ve been wanting to go out on loan to gain some vital experience for a long time.

“Last season I wasn’t really able to do that because of injury, but I’m very happy to be here now and am looking forward to training with the group and getting Wigan back to where they deserve to be.

Sarkic on being in Kazakhstan on deadline day

“I didn’t think I’d get a loan move on deadline day because Kazakhstan are obviously a few hours ahead, so just before I go to bed my agent calls me and tells me that Christian (Walton) has hurt his ankle and for me to not to go to sleep that night. It was really late at night and I had a game the next day but I think it got finished at 4am so I was really tired for the game but it was all worth it.

Sarkic on what he wants from the loan move

“I want to get goalkeeping experience and the chance to play against men, so I can get to a high level and to where I want to be.

It’s a lot different playing Under 23 football to playing competitive football because you’re playing to win where the emphasis at Under 23 level is more on development.

Sarkic on the manager

“The manager and everyone here have been very welcoming. I haven’t really had the chance to speak to him in-depth yet, but I’ve been made to feel very welcome.

Sarkic on his strengths

“Communication is a strength of mine and I command my box very well. I’m quite an athletic person and my distribution is good as well, but of course there’s more things to work on and that’s why I’m here.

Sarkic on looking forward to playing in front of fans

“I haven’t got a lot of experience in playing in front of thousands of people, so I’m looking forward to that part and the atmosphere too.

Sarkic on his footballing background

“In 2007 I moved to Belgium when I was seven and played for Anderlecht for 11 years, but decided to come back to England and was offered a trial by Aston Villa. They decided to take me on and it’s been good ever since.”
