FOOTBALL 4 FORCES: WIGAN ATHLETIC’S INNOVATIVE FOOTBALL AND HEALTH SCHEME

12 April 2018

Project improves the health of the borough’s Armed Forces community while also helping them to feel less socially isolated.

  • Football 4 Forces programme was launched in 2015.
  • Sessions take place at Robin Park Arena and Wigan Youth Zone.
  • Participants complete qualifications and attend lifestyle workshops.

Football 4 Forces is Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s weekly footballing programme for current and former Armed Forces service people.

With free sessions taking place at Robin Park Arena (5.30pm-7pm) and Wigan Youth Zone (11am-12pm) every Monday and Thursday respectively, the scheme aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the borough’s forces community while also helping them to feel less socially isolated.

Participants have the opportunity to complete various coaching and refereeing qualifications as part of the programme, while also becoming volunteers for the Community Trust, attending Latics fixtures and playing football matches against other clubs and organisations.

In addition, lifestyle workshops are held to raise awareness of subjects such as diet, nutrition, healthy eating and the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Club Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson will be re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant at Saturday afternoon’s home game against Rotherham United, a fixture that has been designated to the forces community with Latics offering two free tickets to current and former Armed Forces service people.

The Covenant will see the club continue to support the Ticket for Troops initiative which provides match tickets for serving personnel, support Armed Forces based charities through match day collections and support employees who have spouses and partners in the military.

To claim your two free tickets email h.bulpitt@wiganathletic.com by stating your name, address, phone number, email address and service number. You will then be able to collect your tickets from the Ticket Office on match day. All requests must be made by 1pm on Friday April 13th 2018.
