The recongition and accolades keep on coming for Latics as manager Paul Cook and defender Chey Dunkley won the Manager and Player of the Month awards from Sky Bet for Match.
Cook was named Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for March after making light of a hectic schedule, playing catch-up after our FA Cup heroics. Two exciting draws with promotion rivals Blackburn Rovers and Scunthorpe United were followed by four wins with a 9-0 goal differential to go top again.
Former Ipswich Town boss George Burley, who is on the judging panel, added:
"Wigan Athletic had a very busy schedule in March playing catch-up after their FA Cup heroics. Despite the disappointment of the FA Cup Quarter Final defeat, Paul kept their focus on the league and finished the month undefeated.
“They had started with two draws against rivals Blackburn and Scunthorpe and followed that with four wins and a goal difference of 9 to 0 which took Wigan to the top of the league again.”
Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “This month was so crucial to Wigan’s season, with a huge number of games in hand to contend with, including difficult away games at Bradford, Walsall and direct rivals Blackburn.
“For Cook’s men to come out of it unbeaten, showing great character to come from behind at Blackburn, then keeping four clean sheets in a row, shows the determination in the group to keep their noses in front and ultimately gain promotion to cap a wonderful season.”
Dunkley was integral to our success in March; commanding in both boxes with a natural ability to snuff out danger or sniff out a goal, he enjoyed himself at both ends of the pitch in March, contributing three goals and four successive clean sheets to Wigan’s promotion charge.
Goodman said: “Wigan’s stellar month was built on defensive stability, with four clean sheets and Dunkley and Dan Burn provide a solid base from which the rest of the team can perform.
“When you start to add goals to that, especially three in a single month, he becomes an invaluable asset and he’ll be one of the first names on the team sheet.”
Sky Bet EFL trader Mikey Mumford said: “Since joining from Oxford in the summer, Chey Dunkley has been a real figurehead of this Wigan side alongside fellow centre-back Dan Burn.
“The pair helped to keep four consecutive clean sheets in the month but it was Dunkley’s contribution at the other end which really swayed the vote with his three goals in March doubling his seasonal tally.
“Wigan are proud owners of the meanest defence in the division and it’s no surprise to learn that Dunkley has been a mainstay in that backline only not completing 90 minutes on four occasions this season.”
