Latics roared to the top of Sky Bet League One with a 4-1 victory at Rochdale on Tuesday night as three goals in eight second-half minutes took the game away from Keith Hill’s battling Dale outfit.

Dan Burn gave Latics a first-half lead before James Vaughan, Michael Jacobs and Will Grigg struck to put Paul Cook’s side 4-0 up with just over an hour played.

A late Steven Davies penalty prevented Christian Walton and his defence from protecting another clean sheet but that was the only downside on an evening when Latics strengthened their promotion chances.

Latics were unchanged from the 5-1 win at MK Dons on Saturday and were made to battle in the early stages with the hosts actually creating the first chance as Callum Camps volleyed wide as Latics didn’t get distance on a clearance from an early Rochdale corner.

It was from a Latics corner that Cook’s side took the advantage, though, as Max Power’s delivery was headed towards goal by Chey Dunkley before Burn diverted it beyond Dale goalkeeper Josh Lillis.

The hosts reacted well to going behind as Calvin Andrew, Matty Done, Joe Rafferty and Camps all had chances to equalise, whilst at the other end Nick Powell hit the post and Nathan Byrne was denied a brilliant first Latics goal by a superb save from Lillis.

Latics lost Powell on the stroke of half-time to injury but his replacement Vaughan filled the void with style and, after just nine second-half minutes, doubled our advantage.

The goal itself was classy as Gavin Massey, Grigg and the former Everton man – celebrating his 300th career appearance – linked up to create an opening which Vaughan never looked like turning down as he buried the ball beyond Lillis.

Six minutes later and Jacobs made it 3-0 as he twisted and turned on the edge of the Rochdale area before producing a replica finish to his goal at the Crown Oil Arena in the 2015-16 campaign.

On 62 minutes the game was put to bed as the impressive Massey saw his long range effort saved by Lillis before Grigg leaped on the rebound to clinically finish.

Four minutes from time Latics lost their clean sheet as Andrew went down under the challenge of Dunkley in the area and Davies superbly fired the subsequent penalty past Walton.

That was the only blemish – should all be OK with Powell – on a superb evening for Latics, who were backed on incredibly well by 1,629 travelling supporters.
