Latics were frustrated by fellow promotion chasers Rotherham United at the DW Stadium on Saturday afternoon as a game of few chances ended 0-0.
Paul Cook’s side remain top of Sky Bet League One on goal difference with a game in hand on Blackburn Rovers whilst the visiting Millers’ point edges them a step closer to securing a play-off places.
Unchanged once more, Latics weren’t at their fluent best and had to ride a few early scares as a crucial early block from Chey Dunkley inside the first minute saved early woes.
Ryan Williams was then denied by a Christian Walton close range saves as Rotherham had the better of the early stages before Latics battled back into the game.
Gavin Massey struck over from the edge of the area following a cross from Callum Elder before Will Grigg glanced wide from a driven Nathan Byrne cross for what was probably the best chance of the first-half.
Gary Roberts replaced Nick Powell at half-time and tried to give Latics that needed quality in the final third with a couple of testing deliveries, though the best of them was headed just past his own post by Richard Wood.
Grigg almost found the chance for a textbook near-post finish as Elder broke down the left but the Australian’s cross was blocked at the near post before the visitors cleared from the resultant corner.
Williams was the next to go close for the visitors breaking on the left before cutting in and firing just off target before Latics created two late chances that surely would have won it.
First from Nathan Byrne’s long free-kick from deep substitute James Vaughan headed down into the path of Michael Jacobs who fired over from close range.
Then Jacobs turned provider for Vaughan from Roberts’ late delivery but the striker nodded over after Crackers had headed back across goal.
