Latics were dealt a cruel second half blow in their pursuit of the EFL Youth Alliance title on Tuesday afternoon, as a Callum Hulme penalty prevented Joe Gelhardt's goal from giving Nick Chadwick's side all three points away at Bury FC.

The 1-1 draw keeps Latics top of the EFL Youth Alliance by four points over Rochdale, with Dale still having three games in hand following their 3-1 victory against Preston North End.

Gelhardt scored his fifth goal of the season and third in consecutive matches to give Latics the lead early in the second half, only for Femi Seriki to earn the Shakers a penalty, allowing Hulme to convert with 14 minutes to play.

Latics started both halves with vigour and purpose, with Charlie Jolley dragging the ball narrowly wide early on following clever link-up play with Mwiya Malumo.

Jolley replicated his chance early in the second half but was denied by Bury goalkeeper Scott Moloney following a neat touch from Gelhardt to tee up the attempt.

The latter eventually found the net for his side 11 minutes into the second 45, this time Jolley turned provider, knocking the ball down for Gelhardt who struck a left footed thunderbolt into the top left corner from distance.

Tylor Golden almost made it 2-0 shortly after the opener when he turned an effort wide from six yards. Moments later Golden was unfortunate in bringing Seriki down in the penalty area, allowing Hulme to convert and earn the hosts a point.

Latics almost clinched all three points on two occasions late on, first, Gelhardt was denied by the keeper's fingertips after link-up between Kyle Joseph and Jolley, before captain Joe Downey saw his effort tipped over by Moloney as well.

Latics remain on top, but will have to rely on title rivals Rochdale slipping up at least twice before the end of the season.
